Efficacy of medical-grade honey as an autolytic debridement agent

چکیده

Clinicians have knowledge, skill, and experience of the wound debridement methods and products available to them. To enable them to make informed decisions on which wound debridement processor product is the most appropriate, it is essential that clinicians have access to clinical and cost-effectiveness data. However, the lack of robust evidence to support wound care products is well documented (Gottrup et al, 2010). The case studies presented here were undertaken by the All Wales Tissue Viability Nurse Forum (AWTVNF) and enabled the Forum to gain direct experience using honey as an autolytic debriding agent, evaluate its effectiveness, and achieve positive clinical outcomes for patients involved.

Treating difficult-to-debride wounds using a manuka honey dressing: a case study evaluation

The three main considerations for optimal wound bed preparation are regular debridement to reduce devitalised tissue and encourage formation of healthy granulation tissue, restoration of bacterial balance and promotion of a moist wound-healing environment through exudate management (Schultz et al, 2003). Honey provides a moist wound-healing environment, and is antimicrobial, de-odourising, anti...

Using active Leptospermum honey in the debridement process: 6 challenging cases from the inner city.

The use of honey-based dressings has been documented for thousands of years. Recent studies suggest their effectiveness may be, in part, related to their ability to facilitate autolytic debridement. Six patients who presented with multiple comorbidities and risk factors for delayed healing whose wounds required debridement were managed with active Leptospermum honey (ALH) to evaluate the safety...

Re-introducing honey in the management of wounds and ulcers - theory and practice.

Dressing wounds with honey, a standard practice in past times, went out of fashion when antibiotics came into use. Because antibiotic-resistant bacteria have become a widespread clinical problem, a renaissance in honey use has occurred. Laboratory studies and clinical trials have shown that honey is an effective broad-spectrum antibacterial agent that has no adverse effects on wound tissues. As...

Evidence of Intensive Autolytic Debridement With a Self-Adaptive Wound Dressing.

BACKGROUND Chronic venous leg ulcers (VLUs) can be challenging to manage and heal. Despite the observed efficacy of surgical debridement, many patients with VLUs refuse the procedure due to the associated pain. Autolytic debridement induces no pain, but is slow or disrupted in chronic VLUs. Elucidation of the wound dressing functions that are sufficient to support autolytic debridement is neede...

Comparative Effectiveness of Clostridial Collagenase Ointment to Medicinal Honey for Treatment of Pressure Ulcers

Objective: Compare enzymatic debridement using clostridial collagenase ointment (CCO) with autolytic debridement using medicinal honey in the hospital outpatient setting for treating pressure ulcers (PUs). Approach: Retrospective deidentified electronic health records from 2007-2013 were extracted from the U.S. Wound Registry. Propensity score matching followed by multivariable analyses was use...
